You would literally paint the news on your t-shirt that day and became part of the news, part of the progress with your artwork and your music…the women in punk were doing that; their style was a demonstration of their visual art, about what they were, where they were at and what they believed in.

Caroline Coon, She’s A Punk Rocker UK

She’s A Punk Rocker UK – Zillah Minx’s 2010 celebration of British female non-conformity – is a fantastic antidote to the current male musings on 1976 and all that.

Not one man appears in the hour-long documentary, which is all the better for that with lively and valuable contributions from original scenesters Michelle Brigandage and Yoshoda Mad Mary, writers Julie Burchill and Caroline Coon, artist Gee Vaucher, poet Nettle Baker, performers Gaye Advert, Justine Armatage,  Eve Libertine, Lou Moon, Olga Orbil, Ruth and Janet of Hagar The Womb and the sadly departed Poly Styrene and Vi Subversa as well as Helen Of Troy (Wellington-Lloyd) and Zillah Minx herself and Rachel Minx, her bandmate in Rubella Ballet.

Thanks to Punk Rocker Supreme Alex Murray-Leslie, whose FB posting alerted me to Minx’s film.
