Lloyd Johnson exhibition: The wheels start turning

Donald Smith, Lloyd Johnson + Chelsea Space assistant Emily Rubner.

Yesterday I met Lloyd Johnson to discuss next spring’s exhibition celebrating his career as Pop’s Pontiff Of Cool (a title I shamefully bestowed upon him in a Mojo feature a decade or so ago).

We gathered at the venue for the show, London’s Chelsea Space with the gallery director Donald Smith, who did me so proud with Process.

My feature on Lloyd Johnson's Tiki-themed west London store, Mojo, April 1999.

There are already some amazing pieces earmarked for Lloyd’s show, including the plate glass signage from his Kensington Market shop, the bequiffed mannequins from the King’s Road store, a poster for late 60s business Cockell & Johnson,  suits, leather jackets, boots, shirts, swatches, artwork and all manner of extraordinary items which tell the story of one of the most visually acute individuals of our times.

With the working title Lloyd Johnson: The Modern Outfitter, the exhibition opens at Chelsea Space in January 2012.
