I like a bit of a cavort: Ubangi Stomp by Carl Mann

My favourite reading of this rockabilly racket is by Carl Mann, as released by Charly in 1976.

There have been many other versions; Warren Smith’s notably, and also a fabulous live rendition by Alex Harvey following the dissolution of the Sensational AH Band.

But I prefer this; maybe it’s because of Charly’s cheeky Teddy Boy label on the copy I bought at the record stall at the top of Berwick Street in 1976.

The last time I saw one of the label’s founders was when I interviewed him for Music Week about his dispute with MCA Records in the bar of Cannes’ Majestic Hotel during music biz confab Midem in the mid-90s. He was accompanied by former members of the French Foreign Legion.
