T-shirts: MC5 – Kick out the jams motherfucker!

I’ve collected t-shirts for 30-odd years; this is one of my favourites.

It came from an unexpected source, Zippo in Clapham Park, south London, one of the great independent record shops littering the capital at that time. Among the sympatico staff was Edwin, aka Savage Pencil.

I bought it in 1987 from Pete, the owner,  who had printed up very short runs of a handful of designs representative of Zippo’s musical direction. This came from a poster organised by the ‘5’s manager John Sinclair when Detroit retailer Hudson’s refused to stock their debut album on grounds of profanity.

I recall Zippo did another of solo-period Syd Barrett and a third – in white on black – of The Charlatans at the Red Dog Saloon.

This is yer basic Screen Stars tee, but the image is something else. Levi’s issued a lame-o MC5 tee a decade or so back, when some of the band got back together. I far prefer this.

It’s not “fashion”, but forever.
