Talking Barney Bubbles in Belgium

Talk about Barney Bubbles, Bold Italic, Ghent, March 1 2012.

Last week I gave a talk about the work of Barney Bubbles at Bold Italic, the annual graphics conference organised by Michaël Bussaer of Ghent’s St-Lucas Institute for Higher Education in the Arts.

That’s me referring to Barney’s client, patron and friend Jake Riviera.

The line-up of speakers at this year’s Bold Italic was formidable; for me the most thought-provoking presentation was made by Alexander Negrelli.

His new book Kommando Otl Aicher examines the visual identities of both the 1972 Munich Olympics (Otl Aicher being the German graphics heavyweight responsible for the image of the event that year) and the Palestinian freedom fighters who infiltrated it.

As soon as I returned home  I ordered a copy of the book. Alexander tells me he obtained the music for this trailer from a Palestinian organisation’s website, though it was originated for a video game.
