There were big smiles for Tommy Roberts at the midsummer’s eve party to celebrate the publication of my new book Mr Freedom – Tommy Roberts: British Design Hero.
Our hosts were publisher Jenny Ross and Tommy’s son Keith, who threw open the doors of his Shoreditch shop Two Columbia Road to a thoroughly enjoyable gathering of friends, family and fans.
The advance copies of the book all went in a couple of hours; Tommy himself had a ball signing away. As he always says: “While you’re selling, there’s hope!”

Book jacket designer Trevor Mill proved himself an all-rounder by providing a glam soundtrack for the evening and also taking many of the photographs which appear here. Look out for the following in this party people mosaic: filmmaker Nick Abrahams; graphic designer Pete Barrett; DJs/performers Amber Butchart + Nisha Thirkell; artist/designer Johnny Deluxe; writer Kirsty Hislop; rock journalist John Ingham; National Print Gallery’s Clive Jennings; vintagers Ian Bodenham, Ian Johns + Mandi Martin; film mogul Hamish McAlpine; Tommy’s wife Jane Roberts; and – yes! – reggae legend Tapper Zukie.
Mr Freedom – Tommy Roberts: British Design Hero hits the shops in July.
